CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE

LEA

“HE’S HERE! HE’S HERE!” a little girl in front of me screams as a carriage pulls up in front of the hotel. She propels herself to the porch railing, leaning over the side to get a better look.

Samuel Clemens—more popularly known as Mark Twain—steps out of the carriage. The crowd gathered on the porch and around the front lawn cheer wildly. Children and adults of all ages hug their favorite books of Mr. Twain’s to their chests, hoping for an autograph.

Alec leans over and whispers, “I could push everyone out of the way so you could get closer.”

I answer his teasing offer with mock outrage. “Surely you wouldn’t be so rude as to push the children, Mr. Petrov.”

“Kids are resilient.”

I laugh, much too loudly for propriety. A few women glance my way, but then there’s a spark and a loud boom as the photographer who’s been waiting all morning for Mr. Twain to arrive takes his shot, and the women turn their attention back to the author.

The children surround him as soon as he steps onto the porch. Alec arches a brow at me, but I shake my head. “There is no need to be boorish. I’m sure I’ll get a chance to speak with him at the festivities tonight.”

Alec sighs. “Just so long as you know I would do it for you, if you asked.”

“There isn’t much you wouldn’t do for me, is there, Mr. Petrov?”

His smile fades.

“There is nothing I wouldn’t do for you, Lea.”

My lungs burn, and I have to remind myself to breathe.

“Are you doing anything this afternoon?” he asks.

I shake my head. “Why?”

“I have an idea.”
